BGB-1 Week 12

Monday

Here it is, the final week of my first Baby Got Back challenge and I'm really not sure I want to complete it. I have plans for big changes to the way I exercise when I get back from New York. I'll be there next week, then home for 4 weeks, then back to New York for another week. Then I'll be home until mid-November. I'm trying to decide what to do with those 4 weeks in between trips. I'm going to do a mini-challenge of some sort, but I'm not 100% certain how I want to structure it. I do know that formal weight lifting won't be a part of it. I'll still do strength training, but probably in a different form. I'll post about it once I finalize my plans.

Today I did the Biggest Loser High Intensity Workout, TJ Ab Jam (standing segment), and the TJ 20 Minute Workout. I LOVED IT!!!!!!!! I was going to add on the BL Boot Camp, but my son was impatient so I gave up the tv. I also spent 2 hours cleaning the other half of my house. Plus, I made my first trip to the recycling center with all my totes of recyclables. Then, I loaded all the stuff I'm giving my sister up in New York. Lots of heavy lifting in the heat.

I got my Turbo Jam Fat Blaster dvd today. I am positively giddy! I can't wait to review it. I spent last night watching a few exercise videos and it was fun.

Good on food today. I did want junk at one point but I pushed the thoughts away.

Tuesday

Well, I did my weights this morning so I guess I am going to officially finish this challenge. It was some of my best work, too. I must have pushed myself extra hard because it is THE end of this. After weights, I did Ab Jam and the 20 Minute Workout. I'm finally getting the moves down - there's only one that gives me problems now, and I should have it down by the end of the week.

I reviewed the Fat Blaster, as well as Cardio Party 2 & 3, AND the Biggest Loser Cardio Max segments I didn't watch last week. Oh, and I checked out Jillian Michaels' Cardio Kickboxing on Netflix. I think that's the name of it. I liked what I saw, so I think I'm going to buy it next time I get to the store. Fun stuff in my future, I can tell!

Food was great until I went to the store for ice cream and candy. What the heck is wrong with me???

Wednesday

I overslept, so I got off to a rocky start. I did not want to work out at all. Then I didn't want to do cardio. But I did, and I'm glad. I love Turbo Jam, still!

No junk food today! Yay!

Thursday

I did NOT want to workout this morning. I got up very early because my husband had to start work early and I had a meeting first thing in the morning. So I had do hurry up and either do my cardio or not. I did it. Biggest Loser Boot Camp and my regular Turbos. Good for me.

Food was good.

Friday

Great workout today. Normal weights and Turbos. Then I took my son out to lunch. I didn't eat completely legal, but I did keep the portions small.

I hurt my left wrist somehow. I don't know if it was during my workout or another time during the day. I don't remember any specific time or activity that would have caused this ache. I can barely move it or put any resistance against it.

Saturday

My wrist really hurt last night when I went to bed and I'd pretty much decided that I was not going to workout today. But then I woke up and it was a little better, so I did it anyway. I did regular squats instead of front squats, though, to keep the pressure off my arm a bit. Followed up with some Turbo. I am really getting those moves down!!

I'm not bothering with food today. Tracking, I mean. I've so much left to do to get ready for my trip. I'll behave though. Maybe.

Sunday

Off on "vacation" for a few days. I'll be home Friday and will resume blogging next week. Good riddance to this challenge.

BGB-1 Week 11

Monday

I've decided I need to detox and try to get control of my cravings. That means Atkins Induction (only slightly less fat and more vegetable selection - can't give up those carrots!). I rarely craved junk when I was doing Atkins. So, I'm going back to it, at least for a couple weeks. Then I'll add back in brown rice and beans and maybe some whole wheat stuff. We'll see how it goes.

I had a really great workout today! I started with the Biggest Loser Workout - the high intensity option. Boy, that kicked my butt a bit. Then I took a "break" by doing Ab Jam, then kicked it back up and did the TJ 20 Minute Workout. It was awesome! My coordination is improving a lot. I think this is the routine I'll follow for now - all 3 videos twice a week, and all week while I'm in New York. Actually, I only have 3 workout days up there, but I think these will be fun.

Food has been really good today. I haven't been crazy hungry, and a deviled egg usually kills any cravings I have. Well, I actually craved broccoli, but I don't think that counts.

After some thought, I am going to modify my cardio. I'm going to give up HIIT for a while and do a video every day. I don't look forward to using my elliptical because it's boring, but I think I will enjoy the videos. I've been watching more today to see what I'd like to do. I'm going to try to fit in a 20-30 minute session after weights each day.

Tuesday

I noticed something today when I did the Biggest Loser Boot Camp. Those guys and gals get sweaty. They grunt and grimace and back off when they need to. The Turbo Jam crew members are all perfectly made up and happy and never break form. I realize the Turbo Jammers are, for the most part, "professionals" and very fit, and the Losers are real people who aren't in perfect shape. I like that. It makes me feel better that there are some things I can't do. Like pushups. Well, I can do pushups, but I'd prefer to do them modified, especially after an already intense upper body weight lifting session. Boot Camp was fun, though, and when I watched it yesterday, I wasn't really sure I would have the energy after my regular workout.

I'm not sure which I like better - Biggest Loser or Turbo Jam. I think Turbo takes more coordination, something I wasn't really born with. Biggest Loser is less chaotic. I like them both more than I like the elliptical, that's for sure! I'm almost glad I didn't buy a treadmill because I wouldn't be able to justify not using it in favor of the videos. I'm kind of looking forward to moving to the longer videos! Right now, I can really only do them in 10 or 20 minute segments. And I can't really jump in my house without knocking stuff down. Damn. I need a basement. Or garage, since we don't have basements here.

Food was great today! A little high in calories, but under 2000. I did get a bit hungry in the afternoon, but I was trying to stall so I could eat dinner with my husband. I held off as long as I could, and didn't get to eat with him anyway.

Wednesday

I did my normal leg routine today, then the Turbo Jam 20 Minute Workout. I really enjoyed it. I looked forward to it all day yesterday and it really motivated me to get through weights.

Food was pretty good.

Thursday

I don't know what I was thinking when I decided (without previewing them) to do all 3 segments of the Biggest Loser Cardio Max dvd. I ended up doing only the beginner. I was going to do some Turbo after, but my son was being a punk. I don't plan on doing Cardio Max again for quite some time - there are way too many lunges for my liking. I don't like lunges. I'd even go so far as to say I hate them. I think I'd much rather chop off my legs than do lunges.

Food was not good. I used good news as excuse to "celebrate" with McDonalds and a cake my son made. Thank goodness the cake tastes like crap.

Friday

I love Turbo Jam!!! I did the 20 Minute Workout after upper body today. I love it so much!!! I can't wait to get the other dvd I ordered (Turbo Jam Fat Blaster).

Food was good today. I skipped dinner, though.

Saturday

I did the Biggest Loser Boot Camp today. I was going to throw on some Turbo but changed my mind because I had to hurry up and get the grocery shopping done. Food was ok. On plan, but lots of it.

Sunday

I spent a few hours cleaning this morning. More of the same tomorrow. Eating off plan today - I'm not feeling well.

BGB-1 Week 10

Monday

Ah, another week, another lame attempt at getting it right. It occurred to me last night that I have had 0 net pounds lost in the last year. When I left for New York last June, I weighed 151 pounds. Though I have not been on the scale recently, I cannot imagine that I weigh less than that now.

I have to rearrange my exercise schedule this week due to my son's dentist appointment on Wednesday. It really sucks when the only dentist is 90 minutes away and your appointment is first thing in the morning. So today, I did my upper body stuff. I was going to squeeze in some Turbo Jam after, but I woke up late. I'll try to squeeze it in Thursday.

Food was on track today.

Tuesday

I love HIIT, I hate HIIT. I really can't decide. I hate the elliptical, that's for sure. I want a treadmill.

Food was on track again! Go me!

Wednesday

No exercise today, but I was up by 5:30 AM. I had to take my son to a dentist appointment 90 minutes away. I don't know why I schedule these things first thing in the morning.

My quads are sore today. I had to sit down to feed the stupid fish.

Food's been good! We ate at McDonald's, and I had my usual grilled chicken salad. I didn't even eat any cookies I bought for the kid.

Thursday

I was going to take the day off from exercise but changed my mind. I did the Turbo Jam I should have done on Monday, and boy, did I work up a sweat! It was great - actually fun, too! Not a major accomplishment but I'll take small victories where I can get them.

Good eats again today!

Friday

I am really looking forward to going to New York so I can get a week off from weight training. I haven't had a break since I was sick at the beginning of the year. I'm going to try some Turbo Sculpt while I'm there, just for a change. And I'll bring my resistance bands and try to simulate what I've been doing with free weights, but I doubt it will be as intense.

I'm starving today. I'm not craving junk, which is good, but I know it's going to be a high calorie day.

Saturday

HIIT immediately after legs is kicking my butt. I'm doing 20 minutes, but I don't think my work intervals are as intense as they could be. They are agonizing but I think if I had different equipment, I'd get more out of it. Or maybe I need to experiment with shorter work/recovery periods.

I've been getting better about handling the cravings, and hunger in general. I've been ravenous lately and often want to eat more than I actually do. I find that I'm very hungry while I'm eating and immediately after, but I've been trying not to have seconds or find something else to eat. I remember when I first did BFFM, it took some adjusting to eating every 3-3.5 hours, but once I did, it was very manageable. I'm trying to get back to that.

But crap - I just blew it by eating 3 oatmeal cookies. I did log them in my tracker, and it didn't lead to a binge, though I sure as heck wanted to!!

Sunday

I'm starving today. It's supposed to be a lower carb day, but that last sweet potato is calling my name!! I've tried eating some protein, but at this very moment, I'm struggling not to get dressed and go out in the oppressive heat for a Dairy Queen monstrosity. I hate days like this. I'm desperately trying to keep myself distracted. I wish I could work out, but the living room is occupied and the outdoor heat is oppressive from now until September. I need something, anything but food, to keep my frustrations at bay. It's not enough for me to just say, "Oh, imagine the body you'll have by not eating that!!" I want to care, really, I do. I want control of this crazy, irrational urge to eat things that I know are not good for me. I'd love to be able to eat small portions and practice moderation, but I can't yet. I don't know how and it's make everyone in the house miserable.

Chicken and sweet potato has calmed me for now.

I bought ice cream. Not DQ, but still crap.

BGB-1 Week 9

Monday

I did my Turbo Jam 20 Minute Workout this morning. It went well. I did the standing abs segment of the Ab Jam, and I attempted the lying portion but it sucked. I can't do it. I'll give it another shot next week. I think part of my problem was I was facing away from the TV so I had to twist around to see what was going on. I'll face the TV next time.

Let's not discuss food, shall we?

Tuesday

Slightly new weight routine. I liked it, though I'm not thrilled about pronated lat pulls. I really, really need a pull up bar.

I was ridiculously hungry today. I didn't have any junk food, so that was good.

Wednesday

Good workout. I like the step ups a lot better than lunges and split squats, that's for sure. HIIT wasn't as intense has it could have been.

I was incredibly hungry today. I resisted many temptations though.

Thursday

No workout today. It's a bit chilly out, so we're staying in and playing board games. I am absolutely disgusted with my food choices today.

Friday

Great workout! I swapped out the barbell pullovers for dumbbell pullovers and they feel so much better! Good eats today, too!

Saturday

Wonderful workout. I really pushed the HIIT!!!

Food, not so good.

Sunday

Food sucks. I suck.

BGB-1 Week 8

Monday

I moved on from the Turbo Jam Learn & Burn to the 20 Minute Workout today, plus the usual standing segment of Ab Jam. Maybe next week I'll do both segment. I hate doing abs on my back though. Anyway, it was a good, good workout! I got sweaty and out of breath. I'm still a bit uncoordinated, but I will definitely get the hang of it!

Food was good, too. Low carb day. I even tried a new recipe - curry chicken. It was great.

Tuesday

I've been doing the President's Challenge for over a year now, just logging my exercise each day. I finally accumulated enough points for the Gold award. I thought this was the end, and I was pretty bummed about not really having anything to log (and which is why I signed up for the WOMAN Challenge). But lo and behold:

You are 16 % of the way toward the goal of 500000 points for a Platinum Award. Only 419981 points to go!

So I guess I do have more President's Challenge logging ahead of me.

I'm actually very proud of myself. We were under a tornado watch most of the evening, and it was pretty stressful. I unplugged the computer and didn't really have anything to do, so I was pretty bored. I cooked dinner (but I stopped measuring food), and we ate. Then I was hungry again. There M&Ms in the freezer. I managed to get through the evening without having even one!! I did end up eating a banana, an egg cream, and a chocolate protein shake after dinner (which was cubed steak and spaghetti squash with green pepper and onion). So, I made it through an incredibly boring evening without eating junk food!

Wednesday

I woke up late and had to run off to a playdate, so I didn't get my workout in first thing this morning. I was worried that I'd put it off once I got home, but I didn't. Then I debated skipping HIIT. I didn't. Go me!

On plan with food, still. I'm still really proud of myself for not eating the M&Ms yesterday.

Thursday

No formal exercise today. I've been cleaning the house and getting ready for my father-in-law's visit. As he usually does when he comes down, he's going to be taking us to a seafood buffet. I'm taking a cheat for that meal, both otherwise, I should be on plan during his visit. I shouldn't have any problems with weights, but cardio is always a challenge because a) I'm still uncoordinated with Turbo Jam and b) I only wear shorts and a sports bra when I do cardio - especially HIIT. I get way too hot and cranky if I wear even my usual workout tank top. I'll have to see if I can find something lighter than my tank to wear on the two days I have cardio scheduled while he's here.

I ate on plan today, but my father in law showed up a day early, with freshly processed sausage and jerky from our favorite meat market in Pennsylvania. I ate a few things, but didn't log them in my food tracker because I don't know the nutritional values for the. Protein though. That's all I care about.

Friday

Great workout today. Lat pulls are driving me nuts. I really need a pullup bar.

It was another "if I don't get some chocolate I am going to lose my mind" night. I am proud today that, two nights in a row, I have not caved!! GO ME!

Saturday

I had another great workout. My son was still asleep when I was lifting, so I was able to get through it without lots of distractions. I'm still doing HIIT after legs, and I had no idea if I'd make it all the way through today. My legs were already jelly from the deads and squats. I wanted to drop one interval from the plan, but I didn't. I still miss running though.

I made some homemade low carb peanut butter cups today. I added some chocolate peanut butter Capella flavor drops to them. They are fantastic. I'm trying to practice portion control. It's a miracle the entire batch isn't gone. I have overeaten dinner, though. Damn my husband for being such a great burger griller!!

Sunday

We went out for lunch. I ate dessert. Pfft.

BGB-1 Week 7

Monday

Ah, a new week. I desperately wanted to skip Turbo Jam this morning but I didn't. And I'm glad I didn't because I am really starting to enjoy it.

I am starting to look at treadmills again. I don't think I'll be buying one anytime soon, but I am definitely on the lookout for a good deal. I really do miss running. The TJ is fun, but nothing makes me sweat like a run. I really, really want a treadmill!!

Food was ok today. I did push dinner until pretty late, though.

Tuesday

Good weights day. No Turbo. Food was good.

Wednesday

My quads hate me. Or, they will in the morning. Squats were fantastic today. I am looking forward to some big changes to my routine after next week. And surprise - I am actually enjoying HIIT!

Food was good most of the day. I made chili for my husband, and I was going to have chicken and broccoli, but I decided to have chili instead. It was simple - tomato sauce, beans, burger, onion, and green pepper. I had two bowls, but didn't enter it in my tracker because I really didn't know how much of what I had.

Thursday

No exercise today. It's my optional day. I need to get around to making it mandatory. I think when I change my stuff up after next week, I will. Food was okay. I desperately wanted junk, but stuck to real stuff.

Friday

Workout was fantastic today!! I could really feel my muscles working. The lat throws are great!

I woke up late so food is off schedule. Plus, I was out of cottage cheese, and that threw off my pre-workout snack. I've been fine, otherwise.

Once again, I'm looking at treadmills. I really want to run. We're going to Dick's on Sunday to look around. Maybe they will have a good deal.

Saturday

The day started off pretty rocky. The cottage cheese I bought yesterday was disgusting and I had to scrample for an acceptable pre-workout meal. I ended up making a protein shake, with peanut butter, so it's going to be a high calorie day. After a fantastic workout, I was starving!! I did HIIT on the elliptical again, and threw in an extra interval. I loved it.

Very hungry day. My husband made burgers on the grill. He makes the best burgers.

Sunday

No exercise, but I did some gardening and tried two new foods: egg cream and artichokes. Not together. Both were very good, though the artichokes were a bit more work than the egg cream. Oh, and I tried some Kashi Go Lean protein bars. Pretty good. Not too sweet.

Food was okay today. The cost of food is killing my efforts to stick with chicken breast. We had grilled chicken leg quarters for dinner. Yes, I ate the skin. I may adopt a philosophy of "if it grows, eat it."

Speaking of growing, we planted more in our garden today: cauliflower, watermelon, cantaloupe, pumpkins, and jalapeno peppers.

Sunday, May 11, 2008

BGB-1 Week 6

Monday

I did the Turbo Jam Burn & Ab Jam segments today. They are getting easier. I am going to try to do the Burn segment every day this week, and Ab Jam on Thursday. I would like to move up to the 20 Minute Workout beginning next week.

Food was good today. No cravings and I stayed on plan.

Tuesday

Good workout this morning! I even did the TJ Burn segment. I think I ate on schedule all day. No cravings, again. I'm actually starting to feel pretty good!

Wednesday

I had a great workout today! I had to do my split squats without weights and I couldn't go down very far, but that just means I have a lot of room for progress! I really felt it doing my full squats, too. After lifting, I did real HIIT on the elliptical: 4 minute warm up on level 3, 6 cycles of 1 minute on level 4, 1 minute on level 7, then 4 minute cool down on level 3. I liked it. And there's room for progression.

Wow. I just went for a walk with my almost 4 year old. He weighs just over 40 pounds. I've lost a bit over 40 pounds. Halfway home, he asked me to carry him. How the heck did I get around with that extra weight all the time?? After two blocks, I was huffing and puffing, and I had to put him down and make him walk. Damn.

Thursday

No Turbo Jam today, but I did some house cleaning and yard work.

Friday

Crazy freaking day! I got my weight training in but not cardio. I didn't even get a chance to eat until late afternoon. I am proud of myself for not getting junk food while I was out taking care of a minor crisis.

Saturday

Today has been much calmer than yesterday. I actually got on the scale - 145, which is only 2 pounds up from my low a few weeks ago. I really expected to be closer to 150, so I'll take it.

Exercise was interesting. I did my deadlifts, then supersetted 3x10 of good mornings, skull crushers, and front squats. It was exhausting. I wasn't sure if I'd do my HIIT afterward, but I did. I took a 5 minute rest then hopped on the elliptical. It almost felt like the running I used to do when I did BFL. I miss having a treadmill. I may have to go in debt for one.

Today's lesson learned: No matter how much I'm tempted not to, always measure my food. I didn't want to bother, as my husband was making chicken breast and onion rings. Not having numbers in front of me to keep me in line led me to half a bag of M&Ms, a bowl of Fruit Loops, and some no bake cookies.

Sunday

Back on plan today. Even though I should have learned a lesson yesterday, I'm not measuring my dinner. My husband made homemade macaroni and cheese and pork ribs. I've already made up my mind that I am not having any junk food after dinner. I'm just not!

Looking back on the goals I set, I have done okay. Not stellar, but I've had an okay two weeks. Yesterday's mess up won't happen again. I'm just glad I was able to contain it to one evening.

Sunday, May 4, 2008

BGB-1 Week 5

Monday

I'm very proud of myself. Today I did the Turbo Jam Learn & Burn. I still have problems with the moves at times, but I was able to get through the Burn segment, and I worked up a sweat. Then, I followed with the Ab Jam. I'm very pleased.

No junk food today!

Tuesday

I did the TJ Burn segment again this morning, after lifting. I think I'm getting the hang of it! I'm still off pace and terribly uncoordinated, but it sure beats trudging along on the elliptical.

Food is good, too! I made a wonderful chicken stock to use as the liquid in my baked brown rice. I can't wait! I think I'll start the rice before I workout, then it will be ready by the time I finish and take a shower. I can almost taste it already.

Wednesday

I had every intention of doing some HIIT on the elliptical today after my workout, but I pulls something in my right quad doing split squats. It's not horrible, but it was "painful" enough that I immediately had to stop doing the split squats. Rather than aggravate it, I decided to skip cardio and rest my leg for the next two days. I also need to find two different quad exercises. I am really having problems with lunge-type moves, where most of my weight is on one leg. I also switched to full squats rather than front squats because of my wrists. I'll probably swap out the split squat for a hack squat. I don't know what I'll do on my other leg day in place of walking lunges. I can't get my form down right. Maybe I'll do leg extensions or something.

On a very happy note, my glasses broke today, forcing me to go to the eye doctor for the first time in almost 4 years. I got new glasses and contacts. Now I can workout and see!!! The eye doctor gave my son a blow pop, then gave me a piece of chocolate. GRRR! It's in my freezer. I'm going to melt it and put it in something. I'm going to make an acceptable birthday cake for myself, just a one or two serving thing.

Thursday

I finally got around to making one of the cucumber salads I posted about last week. I made the first version. It was pretty good - too creamy and too much parsley though. I think I'll cut it in half next time.

No workout today. It's supposed to be Turbo Jam day, but I wanted to give my leg another day to rest. I finally settled on side split squats instead of regular and hack squats instead of walking lunges. I know the lunges are probably better for me, but until I get the form perfect, I can't really count on them to give my muscles a good workout. I'll certainly practice, but not weighted for a while.

As I write this now, I feel hungry and really, really want to go into the kitchen and look for something to eat. Notice I said "feel" hungry, not that I "am" hungry. I just ate some pork loin and brown rice salad. It's almost bedtime. But I feel like I want to eat. I still have that square of chocolate from the eye doctor, but I am saving that to make a glaze for my oopsie donuts. Yes, cleochatra came up with an oopsie donut. I am really looking forward to that!

Friday

I am please to report that I did not eat anything last night, after I finished posting. Not only did I not eat, but I also did not go directly to bed just in order to avoid the perceived hunger. Go me!

No cardio today after weights. I slept in a bit and was running late. Hey, it's my birthday - I can be lazy. I am going to hit the cardio heavy next week. I will do it 6 days a week in some form or another. I need to practice the Turbo Jam some more, to make sure I don't tweak my knee during the twist moves.

I made a batch of oopsie donuts today. I melted the dark chocolate I had and drizzled it over 2 of them. I ate the whole batch of oopsies. I'll have to make more. Since I snacked on oopsies all afternoon, I didn't eat dinner. So, not a great day food-wise.

I've spent a few hours on various weight loss boards and I remembered that the more active I am in such communities, the more motivated and successful I am with my own weight loss. Maybe I need to get myself out there more and encourage others.

Saturday

My arms aren't long enough to do hack squats!!! I couldn't believe it. I wonder if I should just use dumbbells instead. That didn't occur to me until this morning. My butt gets in the way when I try to use the barbell. I hate being so short and stubby!

Sunday

Today is going to be rough. I am super, super mad at my husband. So far, I've been able to control my eating. I need to go grocery shopping because we need groceries, but I'm afraid I'll buy something I shouldn't. Eating beforehand does nothing for me. I would buy junk anyway.

I'm still working on my goal setting. I haven't really thought about it much, especially today. I've been avoiding food, which is not good. I know one of my main goals needs to be related to not skipping meals.

Sunday, April 27, 2008

BGB-1 Week 4

Monday

I did the Learn segment of Turbo Jam's Learn & Burn. I was a little more coordinated this time than I was the first time. I have decided to to the Learn part every morning this week, and hopefully I will be able to Burn enxt week! I also did the standing Ab Jam segment. Next week, I'll do both.

Eating was horrible today. I don't know why I make such bad choices. I had 2 bowls of chocolate cereal, 3 small pancakes, and a chocolate Easter bunny within half hour. I feel sick now. I'll do better the rest of the day, but I am making homemade pizza for dinner (crust and all).

Tuesday

I am back and having a good day. I practiced my Turbo Jam moves and I think I'm getting the hang of it. I'll keep up with them all week and give the Burn a go.

On plan with food today. I made some brown rice salad for my post workout meals this week. This stuff is fantastic. Alton Brown is my hero!

I think what I need to do is have a written menu for every week, outline what I can and cannot have. I know that won't necessarily keep me from binging on bad things, but maybe having it written out and posted on the kitchen will help. There's no junk in the house right now, but one of my problems is my husband. If I ask him to go buy me chocolate, he will, without a second thought. I must break him of that. New policy - if I'm craving chocolate, I will make something here at home. If I'm too lazy to make it, I don't need it.

I have to kick this bad habit of impulse eating crap foods. It was easier to quit biting my nails and a lot easier to quit smoking. I used to think quitting smoking is the hardest thing in the world to do. Not any more. Eating right is the hardest thing, for me, to do. I've got strength training down, no problem. My cardio is ok - certainly I could do more. Weight loss is primarily diet, and I suck in that department.

Wednesday

I'm trying really hard to be good today. I wanted to skip my intervals after I lifted, but I talked myself into doing it. I was going to practice my Turbo Jam, but my legs were dead. I'll do it tomorrow. It will give me something to do before I take my son to the playground.

Food is ok. I've learned that I don't need a man to make bacon! I used to have my husband do all the bacon cooking because I was afraid of screwing it up, but he kept "forgetting" to cook it up and I really needed it for the rice salad yesterday. So, after realizing I could make it for that, I made it for lunch. I love turkey bacon.

Thursday

I don't know what to do. I lost it last night with my husband's chocolate covered peanuts. I just couldn't turn them down. I debated with myself for 15 minutes, and I still could not resist them. Of course, that triggered more cravings, so I ate my son's M&Ms. Damn it. I'm really angry with my lack of self control.

I'm taking a few days off from weighing and measuring my food. I get so food obsessed. I need a break for a few days. And I need to stop making special trips to the store for junk food.

Or, I need to keep my refrigerator stocked with fruit. Or maybe I need to go back on Atkins. I never had cravings like this on Atkins. I ate more vegetables and wasn't thinking about food all the time. This sucks.

Friday

Workout was great. I'm really loving the dumbbell lateral throws. They almost give me the confidence to try come complexes. Built has some good ones on her blog. I might give those a shot one of these days.

I forgot, again, to practice the Turbo Jam moves. That's ok. I'll work on it a lot Monday.

Food still sucks. I bought a lot of produce when I went grocery shopping today. I'm tired of chicken, though. The store didn't have any on sale. I have a little left from the last trip to the meat packer. I'll have to go there again. They sell huge chicken boobs.

Saturday

I skipped cardio today. My legs were like jelly after weights today. I increased the weights for 3 of the exercises, and I could really tell! Still, hours later, they are shakey.

No food comments. This sugar addiction is killing me. I don't know what to do. I know what I need to do - swear off sugar and make better choices. I don't know how. I swear, it was easier to quit smoking cold turkey. Evenings are the worst. I need to find a healthy alternative to eating. I don't want to just eat fruit or something else healthy in place of candy. I don't need to eat when I have the cravings. I just want to eat chocolate and sugary things.

Sunday

We went shopping for stuff to start a garden today. Maybe growing my own vegetables will help me eat better. I'm in the midst of a transition to greener living, and that includes gardening, recycling, and composting. I am ready to start gardening and recycling, but the composting will have to wait a couple weeks, when my husband has more time to work in the yard.

Here's what we are planting:

green peppers
jalapeno peppers
green beans
lettuce
zucchini
carrots
broccoli
tomato
pumpkin
scallions
beets
cantaloupe
cucumber
watermelon
peas
spaghetti squash
parsley
rosemary
oregano
spearmint
dill
chives
basil
-- I'll pick up some cilantro next weekend.

I've created a "menu" that I'm going to try to follow on workout days:

pre-workout snack: apple & cottage cheese

post-workout meal:
chicken and rice or sweet potato or whole wheat pasta
or
tuna patties & whole wheat mini bagel

early afternoon meal/snack: fortified french toast, yogurt

After 3 PM and on non-lifting/cardio only days, I'll stick to non-starchy stuff: vegetables, nuts, eggs, lean meats, cheese, beans. And because meat is getting so expensive, I'll be using beans as a substitute for half my normal meat intake. My husband refuses to have dinner without meat, but I told him he has to cut back, too.

BGB-1 Week 3

Monday

We had a road trip today, and I am very proud to say that I packed my own food and stuck to that! Yay! I haven't had any junk today. On one of my muscle boards, there's a clean eating challenge, and I joined, hoping that accountability to people other than myself (and this blog, which is really just me anyway) would help. We have to post EVERY DAY whether we ate clean or cheated. Hopefully that will help me.

Tuesday

Good workout today. I think I'm going to increase the weights for this group. It almost feels easy.

Food sucks. I totally suck.

Wednesday

See Tuesday's entry.

I did end the day on a positive note, though. We went to a buffet for a birthday dinner. This buffet has the most fantastic dessert bar. I did not get anything from the dessert bar. Heck, I didn't even get the buffet. I ordered an entree instead, with the salad bar. A small victory, but I'll take what I can get.

Thursday

I did very well today. Since I had no exercise scheduled, it was a lower carb, lower calorie day. I'm exhausted from my company being here and the carb crash really bites. I need a few nights of good sleep and a few days of good eating to get me back on track.

Friday

Good workout today. Overhead presses were easy, so I'm adding weight next week. Also to the barbell pullovers. Adding reps to lat throws. Those are fun. I love those.

Food has been decent. I need to get more vegetables. I should be eating my starches pre and post workout, but I think I'm too starchy. Even mini bagels have quite a few "bad" carbs. Maybe I'll switch back to the whole wheat bagels.

I ended up not even eating dinner. I was so disgusted with my lack of options that I didn't bother.

Saturday

GREAT food and exercise day. I love leg day because a) it's leg day and b) I know I don't work out the next day. But I hate leg day because it's also when I do my intervals. I know I need to do them right after training, so my legs get a day or more of rest, but it's brutal. Though, I will admit I feel pretty good after doing them. Physically, I'm exhausted, but there's still a bit of a high I get from the accomplishment. Not that it's anything great, but at least I did it.

Sunday

I really hate Sundays. I'm constantly hungry. I did well with food today, though, and I'm proud of myself. I spent the afternoon entering some BFL/BFFM recipes in my MasterCook program. I've decided that I'm not going to be such a stickler for calculating things down to the exact calorie or gram of carbs, protein, and fat. I'll still track my food, of course, but I'm not going to bother recalculating recipes when I use a different brand of rolled oats (for example).

I haven't been on the scale in 2 weeks. To be honest, I am worried about the effect my binges had on my weight. My rings are still loose, so that's good. My birthday is in a couple weeks - maybe I'll challenge myself to stay off the scale until then.

BGB-1 Week 2

Monday

I ate a bit badly today, okay, really badly. In my lame defense, I did spend the day shampooing carpets, moving furniture, climbing ladder. I finished the second half of the house for spring cleaning. I'm totally beat. And starving. It wasn't a chocolate binge though. How I would have loved that.

Tuesday

I'm exhausted. I've been having problems staying asleep lately, and last night my husband didn't get home from work until almost 1 AM. I just can't sleep when he's not home. Surprisingly, I did get up when he got up for work, and I worked out, instead of going back to bed. I tried bribing my son to take a nap, but it was too early in the morning for him to sleep. He won't nap most days. Coffee is good.

Just messing around today with a spotter, I tried to see what my 1 rep max would be for bench press and deadlifts. The goals I set for myself are to bench press 100 pounds and deadlift my body weight (whatever that will be at the time) by the end of summer. This time, I benched 88 lbs and deadlifted 138 lbs. My husband suggested we go through each exercise and see what my 1RM is each, then retest every 2-3 months. I think that would be fun.

Wednesday

I practiced doing some regular barbell on the back squats this morning, two sets mixed in with my scheduled front squats. Front squats hurt my wrists, and I was afraid to do a regular squat because I wasn't sure I could get the bar positioned correctly. I think I'm getting it. I need to find some exercises to deal with the wrist issues so I can continue front squats. But I'd also like to start doing some regular squats as well. Actually, are they even "regular" squats? I have no idea. I'm going for the 1 RM tonight when my husband is home to spot me.

Biceps curl 1 RM is 68 lbs, and just prior to that attempt I did a set of 5 at 52 lbs. I guess the 3 sets of 8 of 23 lbs I did this morning are wimpy.

And it really helps if I get the name of the exercise right. I'm doing overhead dumbbell presses, not military presses. Anyway, my 1 RM is 30lbs for OHPs. I actually did a military press and my 1 RM is 62 lbs.

Thursday

Off today. I have a lot of computer crap to catch up on, and I have a few new strength training forums I want to check out. I'm aiming for a lower carb/calorie day, but the avocados I bought are super ripe and calling my name.

Friday

I'm a total screwup. Food has been horrible the last two days. I don't care at this point. I know I will pull myself out of it eventually, but at this moment, I just don't give a crap. At least I'm still working out. I had a problem with my bb pullovers. Turns out I was doing them improperly, so I had to lower the weight significantly. That's ok. I'd rather do them right!

Saturday

I'm ridiculously bloated from all the garbage I continue to eat. GRRRR. I did have a good workout, though. Cardio kicked my butt. Leg days suck.

Sunday

Two things I've noticed during this week of bad eating - I've had heartburn and I'm exhausted. I don't eat sugar alcohols because of the effect they have on my body. I think I should treat these symptoms the same way. Avoid binging to prevent the heartburn and constant exhaustion. Maybe if I look at it that way, I'll be able to stick to the healthy stuff.

BGB-1 Week 1

Monday

This is how it's going to work. I'm only going to post once per week, but I'm going to write in each weekly post every day. So it will just be one long narrative of my week. I won't be posting menus or numbers anymore, but I will still stay accountable if I cheat or binge.

Tuesday

I've modified my schedule a bit. I'll be taking 2 days a week completely off.

Mondays - Turbo Jam (cardio w/ abs)
Tuesdays - BGB (rack pulls, BB rows, BB presses, DB flyes, calf raises)
Wednesdays - BGB (front squats/bicep curls superset, DB split squats, SHELC), elliptical intervals
Thursdays - OFF
Fridays - BGB (lat pulls, BB pullovers, military presses, side lateral raises)
Saturdays - BGB (deadlifts, good mornings, DB walking lunges, skull crushers), elliptical intervals
Sundays - OFF

This way, I get in some cardio and intervals AND days off after leg days.

Wednesday

I made some vegetable beef stew for dinner, with some homemade bread sticks. They were really, really good. It took everything in me not to eat the leftovers (half the batch).

Thursday

No workout today. It feels weird. But I am cleaning my house, and will be for the next week. Light stuff today. The heavy stuff starts tomorrow.

I was able to resist he breadsticks last night but there are still some in the refrigerator. I told my husband to take them to work but he forgot. I'm sure my son will eat them up, though, so that's good.

Friday

After 2 BGB workouts, had some pretty good DOMS. It's better now, but right now I'm sore from cleaning and anxious to be done. I won't finish all my cleaning until the middle of next week some time. It will feel god though! I won't be counting the cleaning activities in my calorie burner.

Oh, and ate the breadsticks. I spread them out over 2 days and 3 meals, but I still ate them. And I don't feel guilty.

I was doing really, really well today and lost it. I resisted Burger King, came home and had some cottage cheese and an apple. Then some Cheerios. Then I stopped tracking my calories. Then I had a big bowl of Apple Jacks. A hotdog. Crackers. Pancakes. I hate that I deal with anger with food.

Saturday

I'm really kicking myself over last night's binge. I have to get a handle on this crap.

Workout today was great!!! I love doing intervals after legs because I feel like I work harder. I do love this new routine.

Sunday

146.0 this morning. Stupid binge. At least I ate well today, on plan. I spent the day cleaning my house, and more of the same tomorrow, so I'm not going to do my regularly scheduled cardio. There's a lot left to do (carpet shampooing, moving furniture, lots of laundry) and I want to get it finished tomorrow so I can relax after workouts this week. I also need to plan my menu for the inlaws' visit. I will admit, I am looking forward to exercising when they are here - I can show off my new muscles! LOL

All in all, I love the Baby Got Back routine. Here are the current parameters that I'm starting with. It did take some adjustments as I started. On some days, I can do supersets to shave some time off the entire workout.

rack pulls - 5x5 - 73 lbs
lying db rows - 3x8 - 32 lbs
bb press - 5x5 - 47 lbs
db fly - 3x8 - 15 lbs
calf raise - 3x8 - 15 lbs

front squat - 5x5 - 32 lbs
db split squat - 3x8 - 10 lbs (I hate these, for the record!!)
SHELC - 3x8 (I hate these, too)
bicep curls - 3x8 - 22 lbs

lat pull - 5x5 - 78 lbs
bb pullover - 3x8 - 22 lbs
military press - 5x5 - 20 lbs
one arm db lateral throw - 3x8 - 10 lbs (I found these after doing side lat raises and these are so much more fun to do!!!)

romanian deadlift - 5x5 - 78 lbs
good mornings - 3x8 - 12 lbs
walking db lunges - 3x8 - 10 lbs
skull crushers - 3x8 - 22 lbs
